Tata Motors plans to expand its EV (electric vehicle) product range in the coming years. Shailesh Chandra, chairman of Tata Motors’ Passenger Vehicles Business, told ET Auto that the company plans to invest Rs 15,000 crore in the EV segment over the next five years.
Currently, Tata Nexon EV is ruling the country. The domestic automaker aims to build about 10 new electric cars in different sectors. These models come with multiple driving range options.
Details of the upcoming Tata electric vehicles have not yet been revealed, but the range could include Altroz EV, Punch EV, a new coupe SUV EV and Sierra EV. Currently, the company is preparing to launch a long range Tata Nexon EV with a modified Ziptron EV Powertrain.
The new model will have a 40kWh battery pack (instead of the existing 30.2kWh unit) that will provide a range of about 400km on a single charge. It is expected to reach the middle of 2022.
The next electric car from Tata Stables will be the Altroz EV. The electric hatchback uses the same updated Zyptron technology that will be introduced in the 2022 Nexon EV.
However, its battery power and power output may vary. The model supports regular and DC fast charging. Rumor has it that the domestic automaker is working on an electric version of the Tata Punch Mini SUV.
Tata Motors aims to enter the coupe SUV segment with a new model. It is expected to be built on Nexon’s X1 platform and will come with petrol, diesel and electric powertrain options. The new Tata Coupe will be the country’s first pure electric car under the SUV brand.
Introduced as an EV concept at the 2020 Auto Expo, the new Tata Sierra SUV will be the company’s first production model based on the new ‘Bone Electric’ platform.
