Tata Nexon EV is India’s best-selling electric car, with over 40,000 customers and 1 billion km driven. The car offers a powerful performance, a long driving range, and a low maintenance cost. But what about the battery? How long does it last, and how much does it cost to replace it?

Battery Specifications

Tata Nexon EV uses a high-voltage ZIPTRON EV architecture, which consists of a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack and a permanent magnet synchronous motor. The battery pack is IP67-rated, which means it is dust-proof and water-resistant. The battery pack also has a thermal management system, which ensures optimal temperature and performance.

There are two variants of the Tata Nexon EV: Prime and Max. The Prime variant has a 30.2 kWh battery pack, which provides a driving range of 312 km and a power output of 129 PS. The Max variant has a 40.5 kWh battery pack, which provides a driving range of 453 km and a power output of 143 PS.

Both variants have a fast-charging option, which can charge the battery from 0 to 80% in about an hour. The battery can also be charged using a regular 15A socket, which takes about eight hours to fully charge.

Battery Warranty and Replacement Cost

Tata Nexon EV comes with an eight-year or 1.6 lakh km warranty on the battery pack and the motor. This means that if the battery capacity drops below 70% or the motor malfunctions within this period, Tata Motors will replace or repair them free of charge.

However, if the warranty expires or the battery is damaged due to external factors such as accidents, fire, or water ingress, then the customer will have to bear the cost of replacement. According to some sources, the cost of replacing the Tata Nexon EV battery pack is around Rs. 5 lakh for the Prime variant and Rs. 6.5 lakh for the Max variant. This is about 40% of the cost of the car.

However, Tata Motors has not officially confirmed these figures, and they may vary depending on the market conditions and availability of spare parts. Tata Motors has also stated that they are working on reducing the cost of batteries by increasing localisation and recycling.

Battery Types

Tata Nexon EV uses lithium-ion batteries, which are the most common type of batteries used in electric vehicles. Lithium-ion batteries come with multiple advantages when compared to other battery types. Some of these benefits include:

  • High energy density: These batteries can hold more energy for their size and weight compared to other types.
  • Long cycle life: They can withstand more charge-discharge cycles than other batteries.
  • Low self-discharge: They lose less energy when not in use than other batteries.
  • High power output: They can deliver high power for acceleration and regenerative braking.

Yet, lithium-ion batteries come with certain downsides, like:

  • High cost: They are more expensive than other batteries due to the scarcity of lithium and cobalt.
  • Safety issues: They can catch fire or explode if overcharged, overheated, or damaged.
  • Degradation: They lose capacity over time due to chemical reactions and aging.

To overcome these challenges, Tata Motors has designed its ZIPTRON EV architecture with various safety features and quality standards. The company claims that its batteries are tested for over one million km under different conditions.

Conclusion

Tata Nexon EV is a popular electric car that offers a great performance, range, and affordability. The car uses a high-voltage ZIPTRON EV architecture with a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack and a permanent magnet synchronous motor. The battery pack has an eight-year or 1.6 lakh km warranty, which covers any defects or degradation in the battery capacity or performance. However, if the warranty expires or the battery is damaged due to external factors, then the replacement cost may be around Rs. 5 lakh to Rs. 6.5 lakh depending on the variant. Tata Motors is working on reducing the cost of batteries by increasing localisation and recycling.
